So hopefully by now most people know that there is aluminum in your deodorant and it’s been linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Who wants that? I had been using a store bought non-aluminum deodorant such as Crystal Essence and Naturally Fresh for quite some time, but since I’m almost out of it, I decided to make my own today. I’ve never been so excited. It turned out awesome and it was so easy. I had all the ingredients at home anyway and didn’t have to spend any extra money at the store. Bonus! My pits have never smelled better! You might be laughing, but I’m serious. Everyone should try this.
DIY Tea Tree Deodorant
1/4 cup Organic Coconut Oil
1/4 cup Aluminum Free Baking Soda
1/4 cup Arrowroot Powder (I got mine at the co-op, bag yourself area)
16 drops of Tea Tree Essential oil (or Lavender, whatever oil you want to use)
Slightly melt coconut oil just until soft not clumpy. Then mix everything in a bowl and combine. Store in a 4 oz Mason Jar (I used an old face moisturizer container from Avalon Organics. Save your beauty containers and jars! I reuse mine all the time and store coconut oil and other DIY beauty products in them). Then simply apply with your fingers and that’s it. I thought it would be weird at first putting deodorant on that way, but it really wasn’t a big deal. The Tea Tree made it smell amazing, it didn’t go on oily, I think the baking soda and arrowroot powder really give it that dried, soft feeling.
I think next time I make this, I’m going to put it in an empty gel deodorant container. I actually halved this recipe and used 1/8 cup of each and 8 drops of tea tree, but thought it would be easier to write in quarter cups since most measuring sets smallest cup is 1/4 cup. Also, if you have really sensitive skin, use less baking soda.
You might be thinking, does it work? Yes! I applied it today and then did a 30 minute Jillian Michaels workout and of course worked up a sweat. Still smelled pretty good afterward and stayed dry. Let me know if you try it!
